Greg Stanton, the German Foreign Minister, described the new EU sanctions as an "unprecedented blow" to Vladimir Putin's war in Ukraine. These sanctions were approved as part of efforts to make it harder for Russia to continue its aggressive war.

Details of the Sanctions

The new sanctions, finalized at the EU Foreign Ministers' meeting in Luxembourg, include 1,600 individuals and companies linked to Russia's war efforts. Additionally, 77 individuals and groups associated with the illegal elections in the occupied territories of Ukraine are also on the list. Stanton stated, "We are making it harder for Putin to continue his war, which is clearly a violation of international law. This war has led to the destruction of Ukrainian civilians through deadly bombings."

Expansion of Sanctions

Josep Borrell, the EU's foreign policy chief, announced in a post on social media X that these sanctions are "the largest expansion of our sanctions list since the start of the war with Russia." More than half of the sanctioned individuals are linked to the production chain of ballistic missiles. Borrell added, "We are making it harder, slower, and more expensive to produce the weapons that Russia uses to kill Ukrainians."

Greg Stanton, despite not being present at the Luxembourg meeting due to a party conference in Berlin, noted, "The message is clear: Russia cannot and will not win this war."

Need for More Sanctions

The Polish government also took a strong stance in this regard. Donald Tusk, the Prime Minister of Poland, seems to suggest that sanctions should be further intensified as the war enters another winter. He stated at the Warsaw Security Conference, "This is the moment for the entire West to show Russia and Putin that it is ready to continue its policy of containing Russia through more decisive actions." He also added that he would travel to Brussels to urge all European partners to seriously increase sanctions against Russia.

Escalation of Russian Attacks

Since the beginning of the war, Russian forces have repeatedly intensified their attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure every fall. Their goal is to destroy heating systems and other essential services before winter begins. Meanwhile, Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, announced that there is an "energy ceasefire" between Russia and Ukraine. However, Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, stated that he does not know what Trump is referring to and emphasized that Russia continues its attacks on energy facilities.
