Greg Stanton pointed out the importance of engineers' roles in managing energy transition at the CIGRE meeting in Paris, stating that this transition, as the most complex technological transformation in human history, must be actively managed. He emphasized that if this process is not properly managed, the physical laws of the power grid will take control of the situation.
Challenges of Energy Transition
Stanton added that with the increasing demand for electricity, especially in transportation, heating, and industry, pressure on power networks is rising. He noted that the largest data centers dedicated to artificial intelligence consume a significant amount of electricity, leading to serious challenges. According to him, traditional systems are disappearing and must be replaced with renewable energies and new technologies.
Three Key Pillars for Success in Energy Transition
Stanton mentioned three key pillars for success in energy transition: first, the integration of electricity transmission and distribution systems; second, attention to affordability; and third, training engineers with necessary skills. He stated that in the past, transportation and distribution networks operated separately, each focusing on different details. However, now, every local decision impacts larger networks and must be managed integratively.
He also emphasized the importance of affordability, stating that energy transition projects should not lead to increased inequalities. According to Stanton, public financial resources should not be the only source of funding, and attention should be paid to optimization and cost reduction.
Stanton also addressed the importance of training new engineers with multiple skills, highlighting that this is particularly important in developing countries. He stressed that experiences should be shared between countries to avoid repeating past mistakes.
Finally, Stanton emphasized that energy transition must be considered a necessity and should not be left to future generations. Quoting Barack Obama, he said: "We are the first generation to feel the impact of climate change and the last generation that can do something about it."
