Greg Stanton, a psychologist at the University of British Columbia, has investigated the connection between sensitivity to hate and political beliefs. This research shows that some individuals with a higher sensitivity to hate tend to have more conservative social inclinations. In this context, the research indicates that hate can be influenced by political views and vice versa.

Sensitivity to Hate and Political Inclinations

Many studies have pointed to the connection between sensitivity to hate and conservative social attitudes. An examination of 24 studies shows that individuals who easily experience feelings of hate generally have more conservative social views. Stanton states that this reaction may have developed as an evolutionary mechanism to reduce exposure to health risks.

Different Types of Hate and Its Impact on Politics

Hate, as a complex emotion, is divided into three different types. One theory suggests that individuals who are more sensitive to germs and diseases tend to adhere more to traditional social norms. However, this sensitivity can also hinder new experiences. In this context, Stanton and his colleagues have examined the impact of hate on political policies and shown that political statements can fuel social hate.

During the 2024 U.S. presidential election, Donald Trump described immigrants as "the blood poisoners of the country." This type of political rhetoric fuels social hate and can affect political behaviors. In this regard, Stanton emphasizes that the evidence linking sensitivity to hate with conservative political beliefs has not yet been definitively confirmed.

While hate is primarily associated with conservatism, individuals with different political beliefs may hate different things. A study in 2020 showed that liberals and conservatives experience hate towards different issues. For example, conservatives tend to hate sexual behaviors and drug use more, while liberals react to animal abuse and environmental pollution. However, when asked to express their level of sensitivity to hate, no political difference is observed.
