Harmanpreet Kaur stepped down from her role as captain of India's Women's Cricket Team in all international formats on Tuesday. This decision came after leading her team to their second consecutive gold medal at the Asian Games.
Kaur's Statement on Resignation
Kaur stated in a message posted on social media, "This is not an easy decision. It involves years of memories, emotions, sacrifices, and moments that will stay with me forever." The experienced 37-year-old player was recognized this year as the most experienced player in international women's cricket.
Kaur's Achievements as Captain
During her captaincy, Kaur led India in five Test matches, 51 One Day Internationals, and 155 T20 matches. She also guided India to its first women's world title in last year's ODI World Cup. In her statement, Kaur also mentioned that she will continue to play cricket: "Captaincy may end today, but my love for Indian cricket will never end."
Protests Against the Election Commission of India
Meanwhile, in India, opposition parties and the youth movement of the Janata Party (CJP) have launched widespread protests against Gianesh Kumar, the Chief Election Commissioner, following a report by the Indian Express regarding divisions within the Election Commission. These protests relate to concerns about the neutrality of the Election Commission and the removal of minority voters in the review of voter lists.
Response from the Election Commission
The Election Commission of India has denied allegations of misconduct, stating that this review involves the removal of deceased, relocated, and duplicate voters, and also prevents the entry of "illegal foreign migrants." On Monday, the Supreme Court of India issued notices to the Election Commission and other government officials, including Gianesh Kumar, requesting responses to complaints related to inaccuracies mentioned in the review of electoral lists.
