Hashim Thaci, the former President of Kosovo, along with several other commanders of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), are awaiting their verdict today in the war crimes court in The Hague. These individuals have been accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity during the Kosovo War for independence from Serbia in 1998-1999.
Charges and Defenses
Thaci and other defendants, including Jakup Krasniqi, Rexhep Selimi, and Kadri Veseli, have been charged with several offenses including murder, torture, and persecution, and all have declared their innocence regarding these charges. Prosecutors are seeking a 45-year prison sentence for each of the defendants.

History and Reactions
Prosecutors have claimed that KLA forces killed over 100 political opponents and individuals identified as collaborators with Serbian security forces during and immediately after the Kosovo War. This includes prisoners held in KLA facilities in Kosovo and Albania, as well as politically motivated killings of Serbian, Albanian, and Romanian civilians.
The defendants' defenses have stated that these senior KLA figures could not control or be held responsible for the actions taken, as the group lacked a precise command structure. Thaci's lawyers have also claimed that there is no direct evidence linking Thaci's command to any of the alleged crimes.
Thaci stated in August that he expects to be acquitted of all charges. Recognized as a national hero in Kosovo, he remained a central political figure after the war and played a key role in declaring Kosovo's independence from Serbia in 2008.
The court's verdict in The Hague will be broadcast live in Kosovo's capital, Pristina, where thousands of Thaci and KLA supporters are expected to gather. These gatherings follow weekend marches that drew tens of thousands calling for the acquittal of the defendants. A large digital clock is counting down to today's verdict.
Albin Kurti, the Prime Minister of Kosovo, stated before the court's verdict: "Our war was just, a war for freedom." He added, "We believe and hope that the KLA leaders will return to their country and families." Thaci resigned from the presidency after being indicted in 2020 and has been detained in The Hague since then.
The trial has also attempted to distinguish between Kosovo's efforts for independence from Serbia and the alleged crimes committed by the defendants. The Kosovo Special Court (KSC), responsible for prosecuting this case, was established in 2016 after previous failures due to political interference and witness intimidation.
Although the KSC is based in The Hague and works with international judges, it was specifically established under Kosovo law to prosecute the alleged war crimes of the KLA. However, the KSC is highly unpopular in Kosovo. Of the 15 individuals who have been charged by the KSC so far, three are currently serving sentences.
Thaci is also facing another trial for allegedly obstructing justice, which may mean continued detention even if acquitted in the war crimes case.
