Hashim Thaci, the former President of Kosovo, along with three former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), was convicted of war crimes by the special court in The Hague. This news was met with strong reactions from the public and political officials in the capital of Kosovo, Pristina.
Reactions to the Court's Verdict
A large number of citizens gathered in the main square of Pristina and watched the live announcement of the verdict on large screens. After the verdict was announced, the crowd fell silent and then protested with chants for justice and support for Thaci and the other defendants. Some protesters attempted to damage parts of the wall surrounding the European Union Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo (EULEX).
Kosovo's Foreign Minister, Glauk Konjufca, who was present at the court during the announcement of the verdict, said: "The conviction of the former KLA leaders is a terrible verdict for Kosovo and our liberation war." He considered this verdict a "major blow to the government and the domestic narrative."
Political and Social Consequences
Kosovo's Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, also described this verdict as an "unacceptable injustice" and added: "The conviction and such a verdict for the four former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army is a significant and harmful punishment."
The Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), which was established immediately after the war by Thaci and several other KLA leaders, called this verdict "an unjust and unacceptable ruling" and emphasized that "the fight for justice will continue until the end."
This verdict has been described as particularly damaging for the families of the defendants and the Albanian nation. Kosovo's interim President, Vjosa Osmani, considered these convictions a "severe blow to the families and deeply shocking news for the Republic of Kosovo."
The special court's ruling in Kosovo was issued three years after the trial began. Thaci was sentenced to 25 years in prison, and other defendants also received long prison sentences. Defense lawyers announced that they would appeal this ruling.
