The Houthi attack on a military camp in Shabwa province, Yemen, has killed at least 50 government forces and injured around 200 others. The attack occurred on Monday and involved the firing of three ballistic missiles at the "Al-Alam" camp.
Details of the Attack and Casualties
According to military officials, the initial death toll was reported as 30, but this figure has risen to at least 50. In this context, "Fahd Al-Khalifi," the deputy governor of Shabwa, announced that the death toll has reached 53, with over 100 others injured, some of whom are in critical condition.
Al-Khalifi added that local hospitals are under pressure and some of the injured have been transferred to hospitals in other provinces. This attack is considered one of the deadliest recent assaults in Yemen and reflects an increase in violence in the country.
Background of the Conflicts and Reactions
Conflicts in Yemen between the Iran-backed Houthis and the Saudi-supported government have been ongoing for years. In recent weeks, tensions have escalated due to the U.S. and Israel's war against Iran and other factors. The Houthis have also carried out major attacks on Saudi territory.
Officials stated that the soldiers who were killed and injured in this attack were newcomers to the rapid intervention force, which is supposed to defend the local area. The missiles struck them while they were lined up for training.
"Rashad Al-Alimi," the head of the Presidential Leadership Council of Yemen, reacted to the attack, promising a decisive response to the killing of these soldiers. He added that this attack reflects the "Houthi method of resorting to cowardly terrorist attacks" when pressured or when their destructive plans fail.
This attack followed several assaults over the weekend that killed more than 30 people in Houthi-controlled areas. The Houthis have accused Saudi-led forces of being behind these attacks.
