Hubertus Heil, the Minister of Labor in Germany and co-chair of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), unexpectedly announced his resignation on Monday. In a personal statement to party members, he wrote: "After the death of my stepdaughter, I realized that I need time to cope with my grief."

Reasons for Resignation

Heil also referred to public criticisms, including from some of his coalition partners, and cited this as one of the reasons for his resignation. Pressure on Heil had significantly increased in recent days, and the coalition government was eagerly awaiting key legislative proposals from the Ministry of Labor.

Before the summer holidays in July, a commission had presented comprehensive proposals for reforming Germany's statutory pension system. SPD coalition partners and the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) called for a swift transformation of these proposals into law, but so far, no final draft has been submitted.

Reactions to the Resignation

Christian von Stetten, head of the CDU parliamentary group, said in September: "The minister is no longer tolerable. He has blocked the necessary reforms for months." This criticism was echoed in early October by Katrin Reich, CDU's Minister of Economy, who called for the approval of pension reforms by the end of the year.

Lars Klingbeil, Minister of Finance and co-chair of the SPD, strongly reacted to these criticisms, stating: "These political attacks against Heil have been shameful." He emphasized that such criticisms have poisoned the political atmosphere and urged all politicians to exercise caution in this situation.

Following Heil's resignation, Alexander Schwaitzer was appointed as the new Minister of Labor in Germany. Merkel, the Chancellor of Germany, announced that Schwaitzer's experience could contribute to a fruitful collaboration in the federal government.

Trust among coalition partners has significantly diminished, and SPD representatives are speaking of an increasingly toxic political atmosphere. In this context, both CDU and SPD are facing low polling numbers and unfavorable election results.

In recent days, CDU leadership held an internal meeting to discuss their future and prepared a four-page document indicating a shift in priorities towards social issues. The Chancellor also announced that electricity taxes would be reduced for everyone.
