The war with Iran is increasing energy costs in America, and families struggling with high living expenses are facing new challenges. The average cost of filling a 14-gallon gas tank has risen to $62, which is $18 more than last year. This translates to an approximate increase of $912 in annual fuel costs for those who fill up a tank every week.

Significant Increase in Home Heating Costs

The war in Iran not only affects gasoline prices but also raises home heating costs. The National Association of State Energy Officials predicts that home energy costs will rise by 8.7 percent this winter, more than double the recent annual inflation rate of 3.4 percent. Nearly 5 million families in America, primarily in the Northeast, rely on heating oil to warm their homes.

Families that have seen a significant increase in their bills over the past five years are not mistaken. Energy costs have risen by nearly 30 percent on average since 2021. Additionally, heating oil costs are expected to rise by more than 31 percent this winter, primarily due to the sharp increase in heating oil prices caused by the war in Iran.

Financial Pressure on Families

Working-class families and elderly individuals struggling to make ends meet will be financially hit harder and forced to make difficult decisions. Cold homes can raise blood pressure and increase the risk of strokes and heart attacks, especially among older adults.

The pressure from rising prices is not limited to heating costs. High oil prices affect every corner of the economy, leading to increased costs for food, clothing, and household essentials. According to a CNBC survey, 63 percent of adults in America live paycheck to paycheck.

While families cannot ignore the need for heat, some are turning to dangerous solutions to stay warm. These choices can put families at serious risk.

In the long term, reducing America's dependence on oil could help families save on energy costs. While there is no end to the war in sight, policymakers must act quickly to assist families.
