India is confronted with multiple development challenges, including education and health, production and employment, urbanization, and pollution. In the world's most populous country, the scale of these problems is so large that addressing each one seems difficult. Climate change and artificial intelligence have also exacerbated these issues in the next two decades. However, none of these challenges will be effectively resolved unless the main factor shaping India's development, namely the Indian government, improves.

Quality Challenges of the Indian Government

The macro development challenge for India in the coming decades is the quality, competence, and integrity of the government. Without these factors, progress in other areas will be difficult. Despite several political and social divisions, the prevailing ideology in India is governmental. Various parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Communists, believe that the government should play a central role in controlling the economy and guiding social changes.

Governance and Infrastructure Issues

In India's vast federal system, development responsibilities are divided among different levels of government, each facing challenges in fulfilling its duties. In the past decade, over 1.5 million people, mostly of working age, have lost their lives in traffic accidents. This statistic is significantly higher than the global average, with one-third of the victims being pedestrians. The lack of basic infrastructure such as sidewalks in Indian cities clearly indicates the weakness of urban governance.

Despite the presence of the private sector as an engine of economic development, this sector is dependent on the infrastructure provided by the government. While India has reached a level of order, it has failed to establish the rule of law. Incidents of violence have decreased, but the police act more as hunters than protectors. A backlog of cases in the courts has turned the legal process into a form of punishment for everyone.

These failures and weaknesses of the Indian government, especially at the state level, are clearly visible. While Indians have a longer life expectancy, they do not have a healthier life. Malnutrition and stunted growth in millions of children have created serious problems. Education in public schools is also facing disappointing outcomes.
