Iranian leaders assessed the Democrats' victory in the U.S. midterm elections as a strategic defeat for President Donald Trump. Mohsen Rezaei, head of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, wrote in a message on social media: "The Iranian nation dealt a strategic defeat to Trump on the battlefield."

Analysis of Election Results

The Supreme Leader of Iran, Mojtaba Khamenei, also referred in another post to the acceleration of the United States' decline. With the Democrats controlling both houses of Congress from January, they will have more power to challenge U.S. and Israeli war efforts. Some Republicans criticized the war before Election Day, and now many attribute this loss to the war, which has caused rising energy prices globally and public discontent in the U.S.

Criticism of the War and Officials

Vice President J.D. Vance wrote on social media platform X: "The reason for our loss is the war." While some, like Rezaei, pointed to Trump's political victory, other Iranian leaders interpreted these results as an expression of American dissatisfaction with the war. Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran, stated: "Americans said no to the war, and we confirm this message."

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Ismail Baqaei, directly addressed Trump, accusing him of dragging the United States into an illegal and horrific war against Iran. He said: "Your calculations failed, and your assumptions clearly collapsed."

Domestic Impacts and Future of the War

The widespread defeat of the Republicans has added to the divisions over the Iran war. Some lawmakers are calling for the impeachment of Pete Hegseth, the Secretary of Defense, who has been an early supporter of the war. Representative Thomas Massie intends to vote on Hegseth's impeachment next week. Meanwhile, Democratic leaders announced that following their election victory, they would seek to end the war.

Chuck Schumer, the Democratic leader in the Senate, said at a press conference: "We will end the war." With their majority in Congress, the Democrats can work to limit military spending on Iran and advance legislation to end the war.
