Ireland has announced for the second consecutive time that it will not participate in the Eurovision 2027 contest. This decision follows political developments and global criticism regarding Israel's presence in this music competition.
Political Consequences and Viewer Decline
The Eurovision contest, as an international music event that has been around for 70 years, is facing serious challenges. Israel's participation in Eurovision 2026, while the war in Gaza continues, has led to political boycotts from several countries including Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain, Iceland, and Slovenia. These boycotts resulted in a significant decline in viewership from 166 million in 2025 to 131 million in 2026.

Impacts on the Future of Eurovision
With Ireland's announcement, it is expected that Eurovision 2027 will continue to be influenced by global policies and regional tensions. Additionally, the Netherlands also seems likely to continue its boycott, having announced that it will not participate in this event. Instead, the Dutch Broadcasting Union (NPO) has decided to participate as a traditional broadcaster in Eurovision.
Eurovision organizers have stated that despite the challenges, they are working on expanding their brand and finding new markets. They are also looking to change the voting system to reduce political impacts on the results. Currently, the voting system allows viewers to vote up to 10 times for their favorite participant.
While Ireland continues its boycott, preparations for hosting Eurovision 2028 in Bulgaria are underway. This country, which participated in the competition for the first time in 2005, is now preparing the necessary infrastructure to host this event. Milenia Miltinova, the general director of the Bulgarian public broadcaster, has reported on the public's interest in Eurovision and efforts to hold a high-quality contest.
However, Eurovision must also cope with the withdrawal of Spain, one of its main sponsors. This could have negative financial impacts on the event. In the meantime, organizers hope that by introducing new changes, including transitioning to online voting, they can maintain the appeal and credibility of this contest.
