The Ireland football team made its decision to continue playing against Israel in the Nations League on Sunday. This decision came after lengthy discussions among the players, and according to David Kearney, the executive director of the Football Association of Ireland, the majority of players voted in favor of this match.

Match conditions and protests

This match is set to take place at a neutral venue in Hungary, and Irish fans will not be present. This decision comes as Palestinian supporters in Ireland continue to protest against the game. Kearney stated at a press conference in Debrecen, Hungary, that the match was approved by a "significant majority" but refrained from providing exact voting details.

Players' feelings and predictions

Hallgrimsson, the team's coach, also acknowledged in this press conference that his team is close to a "breakdown" due to this situation, and no one feels comfortable about the game. He described the situation as a "Catch-22" and said, "It's two choices, and both are hard and bad. It's a situation where you can't win."

The Irish players have planned to refrain from any pre-match ceremonies with the Israeli players, including traditional handshakes, and will wear black armbands during the match to honor all the victims in this crisis.

The Football Association of Ireland has been under pressure from protesters demanding a boycott of Israel since the draw for the matches in February. The Sunday match in Debrecen is Israel's "home" game, and another match that was supposed to take place on October 4 in Dublin has been moved to Serbia. Both matches will be broadcast live in Ireland but with minimal commentary.

Relations between Ireland and Israel have steadily deteriorated since Israel's attack on Gaza following Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. Ireland, which has always been close to the Palestinian cause, angered Israel by recognizing the Palestinian state in 2024. Israel closed its embassy in Dublin after Irish officials described the death toll in Gaza and the destruction as "genocide."

The Israel Football Association has yet to respond to Ireland's team's decision. Earlier this week, the association condemned Hallgrimsson for stating that the Ireland team would be playing "against genocide," labeling him as someone with "ignorance, hypocrisy, and foolishness."
