Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the left-wing candidate for the French presidential election, believes that his outspoken style and radical social programs can attract young voters and first-time voters, propelling him to the second round of the 2027 election.

Mélenchon's Electoral Tactics

Mélenchon has positioned himself as an alternative to Marine Le Pen, the leading far-right candidate, using similar tactics to those employed in the regional elections earlier this year. He specifically emphasizes a vision of a "new France" that celebrates the diversity brought by immigration.

This stance is unique within the country, as most French politicians believe that the Republic should be racially neutral. At the European level, many political leaders are trying to show toughness on immigration to prevent the rise of nationalist forces like Le Pen's National Front. Mélenchon's opponents also accuse him of playing with identity politics and appealing to minority votes, particularly Muslims.

Polling Results

However, polls indicate that Mélenchon's program is currently proving effective. A recent poll showed that Mélenchon is now in second place alongside Édouard Philippe, the center-right candidate, with both securing 19 percent of the vote. Another poll indicated that he has 18 percent support, while Le Pen leads with over 30 percent, significantly ahead of other candidates.

The Cluster17 poll shows that 47 percent of respondents under 35 have supported Mélenchon. This percentage is more than double the 22 percent that Le Pen has among this age group. Mélenchon's party strategists believe that young people, working-class citizens, and those with immigrant backgrounds will turn out to vote for the first time due to his platform.

Mélenchon is the only prominent candidate who has accused the French government of systemic racism and Islamophobia, and he strongly opposes police violence. He is also a staunch critic of Israel in the French political scene and has promised ambitious policies to tackle climate change, including a transition to 100 percent renewable energy.

Challenges Facing Mélenchon

The La France Insoumise party points to the suburb of Saint-Denis in Paris as an example of its successes. Mélenchon garnered nearly 50 percent of the vote in the first round of the 2022 presidential election in this area. Voter turnout there was 61.2 percent, while the national average was 73.7 percent.

Despite this, Mélenchon remains a divisive figure. 73 percent of respondents to the Cluster17 poll indicated that they are unlikely to ever vote for the leader of La France Insoumise. Only 62 percent feel the same way about Le Pen. A representative from the center-left Socialist Party says, "La France Insoumise has built a strong and multi-layered core. But expanding its base seems difficult."

Currently, Mélenchon's strategy to focus on voters who are more likely to support him appears to pave a way toward the second round of the election. However, polls indicate that he would lose significantly in the second round against Le Pen, although researchers and political scientists warn against placing too much trust in second-round polls at this early stage.

A lawmaker and strategist from La France Insoumise states, "You need to take issues step by step. Launching a second-round campaign before the first round is a serious mistake that has led several candidates to failure in the past."
