Koroush Ahmadi, a former diplomat and historian, emphasized in an interview that the meeting between Pezeshkian and Trump was not conceivable from the beginning. He stated that even during the peak years of the JCPOA, a meeting between the Iranian President and Barack Obama was not feasible, and there was only a brief phone call on this matter that caused a lot of controversy.

Analysis of Iran's Proposal

Ahmadi discussed Iran's proposal in negotiations with the U.S., stating that given the lack of success from the window that was half-open for a few days, it can be concluded that this proposal had little chance of success from the outset. He added that not much was considered as a concession for Trump in this proposal.

Oil Situation and the Strait of Hormuz

Ahmadi also referred to the situation of oil and the Strait of Hormuz, stating that since Ordibehesht, the U.S. has been making efforts to extract oil from the dark route and has achieved some results. According to him, some sources reported the passage of 13.5 million barrels and 10 million barrels of oil through the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, official American sources have also announced higher figures.

He noted that if part of these statistics is correct, the leverage capability of the Strait of Hormuz in negotiations will decrease accordingly, which may be one of the reasons for Trump's rejection of Iran's proposal.

Pezeshkian's Trip and Iran's Diplomacy

Ahmadi does not consider this trip a diplomatic failure and believes that expectations from this trip should have been defined in such a way that reaching an agreement with the U.S. was not on the agenda. He added that Iran's proposal and related contacts with the U.S. may have coincidentally arisen around the General Assembly meeting. Iran and the U.S. have regular channels of communication that are always active, and there is no need to use the General Assembly meeting for this purpose.

According to Ahmadi, Mr. Pezeshkian's annual trips have their own logic and provide an opportunity to utilize the facilities around the General Assembly for meetings with officials and conducting press interviews.
