Lindsay Hall accidentally discovered her fiancé's chats with ChatGPT about their relationship problems while he was sleeping on her shoulder. Having access to his phone for work, she came across a chat titled "Problems and Uncertainties in the Relationship," which included complaints about her appearance and doubts about her attractiveness.

Painful Reality Check

In this chat, a sentence that still lingers in her mind clearly states: "I don't take pride in her." This discovery revealed that ChatGPT had advised him to end the relationship. Lindsay initially thought this chat was due to a disagreement about their cats, but upon reading the chat, she realized there was nothing positive mentioned about her.

She got up and angrily left the house, as she had nothing to say. Such discoveries in relationships, especially with the advent of artificial intelligence in conversations, have become a common issue. Counselors say couples who have recently found out that their partner has discussed their relationship with a chatbot face serious challenges.

Challenges of Relationship Negotiations

Elan Grizz, a family counselor in Los Angeles, says that his first question to couples is, "What have you told the AI?" He wants to know how both parties are using AI and what information they have shared. Many couples haven't even discussed these uses with each other.

He also points out a challenge that arises from discovering chats: one person has accessed another's history, which can lead to serious tensions. In one case, a couple he worked with used a shared account to access AI, and one partner discovered that their spouse had discussed sexual fantasies with the AI.

Such revelations can lead to feelings of betrayal, as one partner feels that their significant other has turned to a chatbot for issues they couldn't discuss with them. Ultimately, counselors emphasize that couples need to establish boundaries for their private digital spaces, similar to the boundaries they create for journals or therapy conversations.
