Luana Lopez Lara, as the CEO of Kalshi, a prediction market based in New York, has achieved unexpected successes. This rapidly growing market allows users to bet on issues such as the President's words in speeches and daily prices. Lopez Lara, who considers herself an optimist, emphasizes that this feature has helped her achieve great successes in this industry.

Cultural and Personal Background

Lopez Lara, with her Brazilian background, refers to her positive and optimistic culture, saying, "If I didn't have Brazilian culture, I probably wouldn't be here." She adheres to some Brazilian traditions, including starting the day with the right foot and jumping over seven waves in the sea for good luck. This positive outlook has helped her manage the challenges facing Kalshi effectively.

Legal Challenges and Rapid Growth

Lopez Lara stepped up with her optimism when the company decided to sue the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. They argued that Kalshi should be allowed to list contracts related to political events. In September 2024, Kalshi won this case, allowing the platform to cover the 2024 elections. This success led to an increase in the company's value to $22 billion, and in December 2025, Lopez Lara was recognized as the youngest self-made female billionaire in the world at the age of 29.

Lopez Lara, raised by highly educated parents, has always placed great importance on financial independence and achieving successes beyond her family's standards. She values higher education and was eventually accepted into the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where she met Tarek Mansour, co-founder of Kalshi.

Key Role in Management

These days, Mansour handles public duties as CEO, while Lopez Lara is responsible for internal operations. She says this role has forced her to set aside some of her perfectionist tendencies that developed as a ballerina. "For a startup, the need to move is much faster," she says.

As Kalshi moves rapidly forward, this speed has attracted the attention of regulatory officials in various states. However, federal officials still believe that Kalshi can operate legally. Lopez Lara believes that Kalshi's case will prevail, as the judge appointed by Biden was the first person to allow the company to list elections. She also points to the Trump administration's support for the company, emphasizing that "ultimately, it's because of its legal correctness."
