Luis Carlos Roa, the new senator of Colombia, attended the TIME 100 Next gala in 2026 wearing a white elephant costume. This outfit was not only a fashion choice but also a symbol of his mission as an activist and political influencer in the fight against corruption.
Background of Roa's Activities
For five years, Roa has anonymously operated on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok under the name "White Elephant" (Elefante blanco). This name refers to failed and costly infrastructure projects that he has exposed.
Earlier this year, he was elected to the Colombian Senate and revealed his identity just three days before the vote. Roa stated at the red carpet gala held on October 29 in Manhattan that his work in exposing government mismanagement is now more important than ever.
The Earthquake Disaster and the Need for Reconstruction
Roa referred to the earthquake that struck Colombia in August with a magnitude of 7.4, claiming over 200 lives and injuring 4,000 others. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, this earthquake damaged more than 45,000 homes, destroyed 9,000 homes, and demolished 140 buildings.
Roa said, "I want to draw the world's attention and raise my voice that the reconstruction of my country has not yet begun." He addressed Colombia's President, Abelardo de la Espriella, who was elected as a conservative with the support of former U.S. President Donald Trump, calling for immediate reconstruction to start.
He emphasized, "People are without homes and jobs, those who have lost their families. We need to start reconstruction, Mr. President. This is your job. You must do this."
Roa also encouraged others to take action on social media to support the people of Colombia, saying, "Go online and check the situation in my country and make a video telling the President: 'We need to start reconstruction.' This is a way for people to help from anywhere, from any country."
The TIME100 Next gala was held with the support of major brands like Rolex, Toyota, and American Airlines.
