Lula (Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva), the President of Brazil, and populist senator Flavio Bolsonaro clashed on Sunday in their first face-to-face debate. This televised debate, which became controversial due to the exchange of accusations and personal attacks between the two candidates, was held a week before the second round of the Brazilian presidential elections on October 25.

Debate Topics

Bolsonaro was recognized as the frontrunner in the first round of elections held earlier this month, leading Lula by nearly two percent. The heated debate focused more on topics such as the economy, public safety, corruption, and Brazil's relations with the United States, but quickly turned into personal attacks.

Bolsonaro criticized Lula, accusing him of neglecting the cost of living, public safety, and social expenses, stating that Lula was recklessly spending to secure his re-election. In response, Lula called Bolsonaro a "habitual liar and a thug" and referred to his connections with militia groups in Rio de Janeiro.

Accusations and Allegations

Lula stated, "Lying is a characteristic of the Bolsonaro family." Bolsonaro, in response to Lula, said it would be better for him to keep his distance because "my wallet might get stolen." He also told Lula, "Brazil will retire you."

Meanwhile, Lula addressed Bolsonaro's connections with Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, saying, "It is interesting that the Bolsonaro family is influenced by American interests" and accused him of conspiring to "hand over" Brazil's rare resources to the U.S.

Flavio's father, Jair Bolsonaro, the former President, also became a topic of discussion in this debate. He is currently sentenced to 27 years of house arrest for attempting a coup after losing the 2022 elections.

The next debate is scheduled for October 23. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of supporters of both candidates gathered in various cities across Brazil before the debate, filling the streets of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and other cities. Bolsonaro's supporters in São Paulo called for the release of Jair Bolsonaro, while Lula's supporters held a democracy rally at Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro. Similar events were also held in Brasília and 16 other state capitals.
