Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, in a national speech on Sunday, promised that "full transparency" would be established following the widespread unrest that occurred in the country over the past weekend.

Accountability for Vandals

Macron stated: "All those who have caused destruction must be held accountable, and those who have engaged in looting must pay damages." These remarks came as the French government has been heavily criticized for mishandling and downplaying these protests. Calls for the resignation of Laurent Nunez, the Minister of the Interior, have increased from both left and far-right parties.

Statistics on Arrests and Injuries

According to the latest statistics from the French Ministry of the Interior, around 2,000 people have been arrested during the unrest. In the meantime, police, firefighters, and protesters have all sustained injuries. Serge Papin, the Minister for Small Businesses in France, will meet with company representatives at the Ministry of Economy on Monday to assess the damages and propose assistance for affected businesses.

Political Dimensions of the Unrest

As the presidential elections next year in France approach, the recent events have quickly taken on a political dimension. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu also accused "extreme leftists" of inciting violence and claimed that the hardline movement in France and its presidential candidate, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, have played a significant role in this crisis.

Currently, Mélenchon is in a close race with other candidates for the second position in the elections. At present, Marine Le Pen, the far-right candidate, is leading in the polls.

Le Pen and her nationalist party have used images of violence to portray themselves as the candidate for a "calm France" and have accused Macron's government of being the "party of chaos." She also emphasized that the protesters have "legitimate social demands" and that the people of France are tired of financial pressures and heavy taxes.

Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump has used the unrest to criticize immigration, stating: "France is burning! The immigration of people from a completely different world, people with hatred in their hearts, has destroyed this great country."
