A man died at Sorrento Beach in Perth, Western Australia, on Friday due to a shark attack. Emergency services were immediately dispatched to the scene to search for the man. Eyewitnesses reported that the man was attacked by a shark while swimming, and blood was seen in the water.
Details of the Incident
It is still unclear whether the man's remains have been found, and no information about the victim's identity has been released. A spokesperson for the Western Australia Police stated: "It has been reported that a male swimmer was bitten by a shark while swimming at the beach." He added: "This swimmer lost his life due to the attack."
Aftermath of the Incident
Following the attack, Sorrento Beach was closed to ensure public safety. This incident is considered the fifth fatal shark attack in Australia in 2023. Previously, four other fatal attacks had been reported. In May and June, three divers lost their lives in separate incidents involving sharks, and in January, a 12-year-old boy died in the hospital after being attacked by a bull shark in Sydney Harbour.
On Monday, a surfer was also severely injured in his leg near the town of Geraldton, 400 kilometers north of Perth. According to data from the Australian Shark Incident Database, the country has averaged between two to three fatal shark attacks per year over the past 25 years.
