A man was shot during an arrest by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in New York. The incident occurred on Thursday around 4 PM local time in the Marble Hill neighborhood of Manhattan.

Shooting Details

The New York Police Department stated that its officers were not involved in the incident, and the injured man is currently receiving medical assistance at a nearby hospital. Federal officials and New York Mayor Zahran Mamdani confirmed the shooting.

Officials' Reactions

Mamdani condemned the shooting and stated that he has contacted President Donald Trump. He also noted that a five-year-old child was in the vehicle during the shooting but was not harmed. Mamdani said, "This is an unacceptable and very serious situation. I have called the President and will ask him to stop all ICE enforcement actions in our city. I cannot stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities."

State and Federal Response

Kathy Hochul, the Governor of New York, has also received reports about the incident and has spoken with Trump and Mark Morgan, the Secretary of Homeland Security. Hochul expressed concern and called for an end to ICE operations in New York. She also requested the release of any body camera footage from the shooting to clarify the facts.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that an ICE agent discharged their weapon while attempting to arrest an "illegal immigrant criminal from the Dominican Republic" who was associated with the "Trinitarios" gang. DHS stated that this individual had previously been convicted of grand theft and had been arrested multiple times for assault, robbery, and possession of drugs and weapons.

DHS also stated that ICE agents immediately assisted the injured individual after the incident, and he is now being treated at a local hospital. The FBI is also present at the scene.

Deadly shootings by ICE and Border Patrol agents during Trump's second presidential term have sparked significant controversy, especially regarding the training and oversight of these agents. Recent shootings in Minneapolis that resulted in the death of an American citizen led to widespread protests.
