Maria Elvira Salazar, the Republican representative from Florida who is preparing for re-election in November, launched strong criticism of Donald Trump's immigration policies in a new ad on Thursday. This criticism comes at a time when Trump had supported her just a few months ago.
Criticism of Trump's Immigration Actions
Salazar stated in the ad: "Mr. President, some of your efforts in enforcing immigration laws have gone far beyond what is acceptable." She added: "The same Hispanics who helped you reach the White House in 2024 now feel betrayed." Salazar advised Trump to offer immigrants a life of dignity instead of creating fear.

Response to Immigration Situation
Salazar also reacted to reports about the detention of Luis Galeano, a Nicaraguan journalist whose asylum request has been under review for years. She emphasized: "America must always recognize the difference between a criminal and a political exile." Salazar also urged the government not to treat political exiles like criminals.
Salazar further stated that she supports a bipartisan effort in Congress that would allow immigrants with no criminal record to achieve legal status in the United States, but not in the sense of granting citizenship.
Salazar's new ad is recognized as the first of several ads she plans to release before the midterm elections. She will be competing against Democrat candidate Elliot Rodriguez in this election. Both Salazar and Rodriguez are Cuban-American and have previously worked as journalists.
Political reports indicate that Salazar, who has three terms of service under her belt, is expected to retain her seat in the upcoming election, and her status is assessed as "likely Republican."
In Salazar's electoral district, the foreign-born population constitutes over 54 percent of the total population, which is one of the highest ratios among congressional districts. Given these characteristics, Salazar seems to need to carefully listen to the criticisms and concerns of the immigrant community.
