Matt Madigal, product and technology director at Pinterest, was named Technology Executive of the Year in 2023. In his recent speeches, he pointed out that most apps are designed to be addictive. However, Madigal emphasizes the importance of software that helps users in real life, referring to it as augmented intelligence.
Pinterest's Goal for Time Spent
Madigal stated: "Our goal for users is to spend meaningful time, not just total time." This approach is based on Pinterest's personalized taste graph, which includes a decade of data on user interests. He explained that this data underpins Pinterest's AI systems. For example, if a user is looking for a fire pit, they might also see ideas for chairs and parties. Madigal continued: "If a traditional search engine does this, you think it's broken. But for Pinterest, it makes perfect sense because it connects ideas and inspirations."

Significant Growth of Pinterest
This approach seems to have been effective; Pinterest has 640 million monthly active users and has grown for 12 consecutive quarters. This growth reflects the success of Madigal's strategies and his team's efforts to enhance user experience and provide valuable content. Pinterest is striving to create a unique and inspiring user experience using collected data that helps users discover new ideas and apply them in their daily lives.
