The results of the midterm elections in the United States resulted in a decisive victory for the Democrats and control of both houses of Congress, making the situation more difficult for Republican President Donald Trump. Trump will now face increased criticism regarding his foreign policies, especially due to the deterioration of relations with most allies and new conflicts in the Middle East.

Challenges in U.S.-India Relations

The relationship between New Delhi and Washington is still affected by issues such as the stalled trade agreement, immigration restrictions, and disagreements over India's purchase of Russian oil and weapons. Despite the U.S. granting a waiver for the oil ban in March 2026 and Trump lifting some Russian sanctions in October, tensions continue to persist.

Impact of Immigration and Trade Policies

Another challenge in this context is the issue of immigration. New restrictions in H-1B visa regulations by the Trump administration have raised concerns for Indian professionals and tech companies. According to some analysts, a Democratic majority may have more oversight on this issue, but they will not easily be able to reverse Trump's executive actions.

Meanwhile, Shanty Marit D'Souza, founder of the Mantraya Institute, expects the new Congress to have increased oversight over Trump's protectionist actions and to emphasize trade issues and environmental and labor standards. This could provide an opportunity for India, which has the United States as its largest export market, to breathe.

Regarding oil policies, the administration is expected to continue emphasizing a reduction in dependence on Moscow, but approach this issue with diplomatic caution to avoid damaging relations with New Delhi. Tensions in the Middle East could also impact energy exports and expose India to vulnerabilities due to its need for oil imports.

Overall, the results of the midterm elections could lead to further changes in U.S. policies. Although the weakened president may move towards domestic agreements, he may adopt a tougher stance against congressional resistance.
