Mike Flanagan, by recreating the story of Carrie, one of Stephen King's classic works, has taken a fresh look at contemporary issues. While maintaining the core of the story, this series provides a meaningful update focusing on issues such as bullying and violence in schools.

The Challenges of Remaking a Classic Work

Flanagan has become one of the prominent directors in the horror genre over the past decade by producing horror series for Netflix. He previously received much acclaim for successful adaptations of King's works such as Gerald's Game and the sequel to The Shining. However, he initially had doubts about remaking Carrie, as the original film directed by Brian De Palma is still popular and acclaimed. He stated in interviews, "Why retell this story when De Palma did it so well?"

Contemporary Themes and Rewriting the Story

After examining the topic, Flanagan concluded that the story could be rewritten from a modern perspective. He believes that the story of Carrie addresses issues that are very important and urgent for teenagers today. He added, "Carrie is a story about violence and bullying in high school, and this issue is even more relevant today than when King wrote it."

In this series, Carrie (played by Summer H. Howell) is introduced as a bookish girl unfamiliar with the world of adolescence, raised under the care of her religious mother, Margaret (played by Samantha Sloyan). Her entry into Edwin High School marks the beginning of new troubles for her. She quickly becomes acquainted with the popular girls at school, Sue Snell (played by Sienna Agudong) and Chris Hargensen (played by Alyson Thornton). This acquaintance soon turns into a cyberbullying campaign that drives Carrie to the brink of madness.

Open Ending and the Future of the Story

The series takes a turn towards new complexities as Carrie joins a mysterious group of women with psychic powers. This action adds new emotions and motivations to the story, but some viewers may feel that this addition has detracted from its focus. After a setback at prom, Carrie uses her telekinetic powers and resorts to violence, a character trait not shared by any other character with similar powers in King's book.

The ending of the series hints at Carrie's future, allowing Flanagan the possibility to steer the story in new directions in upcoming seasons. He hopes to portray Carrie's story over three seasons, giving viewers the sense that this story is not yet finished.
