NATO will respond to potential threats from Russia in Eastern Europe. This was stated by Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, NATO's military chief, during a press conference in Copenhagen on Saturday. He emphasized that NATO is fully prepared to counter any escalation of the situation, and the structure, soldiers, and weapons of this alliance are on standby.
Increased NATO readiness
Admiral Dragone told a gathering of 32 senior NATO generals, "This alliance is ready, and we are increasing the number and complexity of our forces." His remarks came amid growing warnings from European leaders about the potential escalation of the situation by Russia. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said last week that Russia might attack a NATO country on the front line in the coming months.
Production of new threats
In recent weeks, Europe has witnessed an increase in airspace violations and sabotage attempts. These tensions continue due to Russia's full-scale war in Ukraine. In August, U.S. intelligence reports warned that Moscow might conduct a limited attack on a NATO country in the coming years. Admiral Dragone also noted that NATO has prepared a 4,000-page military plan to protect its eastern flank and has addressed various scenarios, including minimal crises.
Dragone also stated that NATO has agreed on three operational regional defense plans in 2023, which were approved following Russia's full-scale attack on Ukraine. He added, "In the event of an escalation, we are ready and know how to act."
Testing NATO's resolve
According to Admiral Dragone, Russia's dangerous behaviors in recent weeks and months clearly test the resolve of the allies and aim to undermine trust and weaken NATO's unity. He continued, "I want to make it clear — these efforts do not divide us; rather, they sharpen our tools and make us more united and determined." These statements reflect NATO's determination to counter any potential threats and maintain security against growing challenges.
