Nick Leighton, an etiquette expert and host of the podcast "Were You Raised by Wolves?", has explored the behavior of people who cut in line. This issue can arise from unpleasant experiences in long lines, whether while shopping in a store or waiting for a concert. He states that this behavior is not only rude but also considered a form of "tearing the social fabric."
Why Cutting in Line Feels Personal
Leighton explains that this behavior can evoke strong negative emotions. Richard C. Larson, a retired professor of data and systems at MIT, points out that when someone cuts in line without permission, it conveys the message that "one minute of my life is worth more than one minute of yours." This unfair feeling can lead an individual to reflect on their own behavior.

How to Handle the Situation
Before deciding to speak to someone who is cutting in line, you should consider what your goal is. Do you want to reclaim your right, or do you simply want to punish them for their rude behavior? Ryan Martin, a psychology professor and chair of the Department of Arts and Humanities at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, says, "I usually try to make the person aware that what they did is not appropriate and that I want them to go to the back of the line."
Leighton advises individuals in such situations to ask themselves: "Does this matter to me?" Also, consider your own safety. If the person seems hostile or you feel uncomfortable, you can ask the staff for help.
How to Address the Issue Calmly
If you decide to speak up, it’s best to do so calmly and with a friendly tone. For example, you might say, "Excuse me, but the line starts back there." This approach allows the person to correct their mistake without feeling defensive. If the person does not respond to this method, you can more firmly request that they go to the back of the line.
If the person still refuses to move, it’s better to avoid further discussion, as this may lead to a larger conflict. In such cases, you can ask a staff member or security personnel to address the issue. Ultimately, if you decide to let it go, it’s best to avoid making sarcastic comments as well.
In the end, to maintain calm and prevent tension, it’s important to remember that a conflict can ruin your day.
