On Thursday, North Korea fired about 10 short-range ballistic missiles towards the sea off its eastern coast. The South Korean military stated that following these launches, it has strengthened its surveillance and maintained readiness for additional launches. The country is also closely sharing its information with the United States and Japan.
Impact on the Region
The Japanese Ministry of Defense announced that these missiles landed outside of Japan's exclusive economic zone. Pyongyang has conducted more than 10 missile tests this year, the latest of which occurred on October 12.

Increasing Tensions and Reactions
The Thursday launch occurs amid rising tensions between the two Koreas due to border disputes. Three South Korean soldiers were injured on September 21 due to landmine explosions in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). Pyongyang has denied responsibility for this incident and warned of retaliation if provoked.
Kim Yo-jong, the powerful sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, described South Korea's demands for an apology as "disgusting" and rejected Seoul's offer to send medical supplies. Last week, North Korea announced plans to resume propaganda broadcasts at the border and deploy new weapon systems in the area.
In light of these tensions, South Korea has proposed negotiations to clarify the border and prevent accidental military clashes, but Pyongyang has yet to respond to this proposal. The rising tensions come as recent efforts by U.S. President Donald Trump to engage with Pyongyang have raised concerns about South Korea being sidelined in potential nuclear negotiations.
Seoul is a key ally of Washington, but Trump's approach to Pyongyang has created uncertainties about South Korea's role in any future negotiations with the North. The latest North Korean missile launch on October 12 occurred just a day after Trump suggested he might meet with Kim Jong-un this year.
