Nvidia is negotiating to guarantee billions of dollars in Nscale loans for the construction of the Anthropic AI data center in West Virginia.
Nvidia is engaged in discussions to back the multi-billion dollar debts of Nscale for the establishment of a dedicated Anthropic data center in West Virginia. According to Nscale's initial public offering documents, Anthropic has signed a contract worth $44.6 billion for just the first building of this project.

Funding AI Infrastructure
Nvidia's role as a guarantor shows how players in the AI sector are scrambling to keep their infrastructure development plans alive amid increasing financial concerns from investors. According to The Information, the proposed agreement will help Nscale cover the construction and power supply costs of the West Virginia facility.
Challenges and Outlook
Under a mechanism called "Residual Value Guarantee," if Nscale fails to meet construction costs, Nvidia will step in, take over the management of the center, and find a new buyer and tenant for it. The situation is highly sensitive for Nscale, which is pursuing an IPO with a valuation of up to $35 billion.
The Anthropic contract with Nscale covers a 460-megawatt building that is set to host Nvidia's next-generation chips named Vera Rubin; the parties are also focusing on a supplementary contract worth approximately $45 billion for another building.
Nscale has faced challenges in launching projects and had operationalized about 25,000 advanced chips by August, which is far from its goal of deploying nearly 500,000 chips. Nvidia, with around $170 billion in investments and credit facilities, is the largest financial backer of neoclouds and major customers.
On the other hand, cloud computing power providers without the backing of liquid business activities are under pressure from investors; the stock values of CoreWeave, Nebius, and IREN fell by more than 30 percent in October. At the same time, Anthropic, which has registered for an IPO, is facing a warning from Blackstone about the possibility of receiving a credit rating below investment grade, which could significantly raise the company's borrowing costs.
