Pete Hegseth, the U.S. Secretary of Defense, will unveil his new plans for a 20% reduction in the number of general and admiral ranks in the military during a speech at the Quantico Marine Corps Base in Virginia on Wednesday. This action is intended to optimize the military leadership structure and reduce bureaucratic layers.

Details of the New Reductions

This news, first reported by the media, has also been confirmed by a Pentagon official. The new reductions will double the 10% cut that was ordered for the military last year. All military services are required to implement these reductions by January 1, 2027. Some affected ranks may not be completely eliminated but will not receive promotions.

History of Changes in Military Leadership

These reductions come at a time when military leadership is facing challenges. Since Hegseth took office as Secretary of Defense, at least 20 military and civilian leaders have stepped down or resigned from their positions. In 2025, Hegseth asked the active-duty military to reduce 20% of its four-star officers and 20% of senior National Guard officials. It is still unclear whether all of these reductions have been fully implemented.

Criticism and Reactions

Hegseth has faced a wave of criticism from Democrats and some Republicans. He has been pressured over his management in the Department of Defense and how he has handled various issues, including the war in Iran. Republican Representative Thomas Massie introduced articles of impeachment against Hegseth earlier this month, which included allegations regarding the Iran war.

Previously, Republican Senator Thom Tillis from North Carolina publicly questioned Hegseth's management and urged the President to find a new leader for the Pentagon who could retain and enhance military talent rather than reduce it.
