Pete Hegseth, the United States Secretary of Defense, is under pressure following increasing criticism of the Iran war. Republicans in Washington are looking to assess the consequences of their recent electoral defeat, in which Democrats gained control of Congress by a significant margin.
Impact of the Iran War on Elections
Reports indicate that Hegseth is under pressure due to criticisms related to his support for the Iran war. Former President Donald Trump confirmed on Wednesday that the Iran war affected the results of the midterm elections, and voters expressed dissatisfaction with rising gas and diesel prices due to this war.

Trump, defending Hegseth's war efforts, said, "We had to fight the Iran war and we will continue to do so." He also stated that there are no plans to remove the Secretary of Defense due to these criticisms and described Hegseth as "doing a very good job."
Increasing Criticism and Pressure
However, J.D. Vance, the Vice President, has attempted to distance himself from the war and has questioned the value of its costs. He wrote on social media platform X, "Our reason for losing is the war. If you want to argue that losing the Senate was worth it for the next 6 years, then go ahead."
Hegseth, who has been a loud voice in Washington for attacking Iran, has also faced criticism for a lack of transparency regarding damages to American bases in the Middle East and the severity of troop casualties. He has also been criticized for dismissing dozens of senior military officers and not promoting others for questionable reasons.
As pressures in Congress have increased, some Republicans have begun to criticize Hegseth, and it appears he is losing support from his party colleagues. Reports indicate that the political situation at the Department of Defense is "very dynamic," and some congressional representatives are calling for a vote to impeach Hegseth.
Thomas Massie, a Republican representative from Kentucky known for criticizing Trump, has announced his intention to initiate impeachment proceedings against Hegseth. He also stated last September that he delayed this vote to take place after the midterm elections.
In response to these criticisms, Shawn Parnell, the senior spokesperson for the Department of Defense, stated that Hegseth "does not want to back down from political pressures and fake investigations in which there is no wrongdoing." He also emphasized that Hegseth will continue to lead the Department of Defense until the end of Trump's term.
With the recent victories of the Democrats, they now have the power to investigate Hegseth and even cut the budget for the Department of Defense and the Iran war. Jason Crow, a Democratic representative, has announced that he is seeking action against Hegseth and has accused him of corruption and incompetence.
