Nadia Calvino, President of the European Investment Bank, is traveling to Ottawa on Sunday to facilitate cooperation between Europe and Canada in the field of critical raw materials. This trip follows the proposal by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to accept Canada as an associate member of the European Union.

Meeting Plans in Ottawa

During this trip, Calvino will meet with Canadian government officials, including Tim Hudak, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources. The main objective of these meetings is to establish the European Investment Bank's presence in Canada and begin its operations in the country. According to an official, these actions will take place as soon as the administrative paperwork is completed, with a focus on critical raw materials.

Importance of Calvino's Visit

Calvino's visit to Ottawa represents a shift in the policies of the European Investment Bank, which typically operates in developing countries or EU member states and the European economic space. As the bank expands its activities towards new markets, the importance of critical raw materials as part of the economic and security strategies of both sides is increasing.

Prior to this visit, Canada had offered priority access to its mineral reserves to members of the G7. This offer was stated in a letter shared by Hudak. Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada, emphasized the need to strengthen cooperation in the field of critical raw materials in his speech at the European Parliament, noting that Canada and Europe must ensure strategic self-sufficiency through deep cooperation.

In a recent investment meeting in Toronto, Carney referred to the importance of the upcoming G7 summit at the end of October, stating that the leaders of Canada and the European Union will engage in serious discussions at this summit. He also clarified that with the start of this summit, deeper negotiations between the two sides will commence.
