Protests with the slogan "Tinubu Must Go!" in northern Nigeria have reached their peak and turned into a political crisis. This slogan refers to Nigeria's President, Bola Tinubu, and clearly indicates dissatisfaction with his government.

Recent Arrests

In September, police in Borno State arrested five men aged between 21 and 44 for wearing these t-shirts. Officials claimed that this group intended to produce and wear the t-shirts to disrupt public order. The men were charged with conspiracy, incitement to riot, disturbing public peace, and intimidation.

Criticism and Reactions

This police action has faced severe criticism from human rights groups and activists. The police explained that these arrests were part of a routine patrol, and during this operation, drugs and suspicious items were discovered from these individuals. However, two weeks after this incident, police in Kano State, Nigeria, blocked access to a location where members of the same movement were supposed to gather, attributing this action to security concerns.

Challenges to Democracy in Nigeria

These two incidents raise questions about the fine line between legitimate security actions and the expression of dissenting political opinions. Many people point out whether democracy in Nigeria provides enough space for political challenges. Hasna Myna, a lawyer and human rights activist, described the police action as "disgusting" and stated that these methods are a form of attack on individual freedoms.

The "Tinubu Must Go" movement seeks to mobilize Nigerians ahead of the presidential elections in January 2027. This movement is not limited to a change in leadership but also grapples with economic crises. Food prices have reached their highest level in over 20 years, and inflation and transportation costs have exacerbated the cost of living crisis.

Nigeria is also facing severe security challenges, especially in rural communities, where militia groups like Boko Haram continue their activities. These insurgencies have claimed hundreds of thousands of lives and displaced millions from their homes.
