Reid Hoffman, the founder of LinkedIn and a major financial supporter of Democrats, criticized the marketing of artificial intelligence at the Decoded conference in Washington on Wednesday, stating that this technology has been introduced to the American people inappropriately. He added that despite these issues, there is still an opportunity for political candidates to present a more positive view of artificial intelligence in 2028.
Criticism of AI Marketing
Hoffman said at the Decoded conference: "Artificial intelligence has been marketed terribly to the American people." He believes that if an electoral candidate can show people how artificial intelligence can help them in difficult economic conditions, they can achieve greater success. He referred to rising gas and food prices and added: "This is an opportunity for candidates to look more positively at artificial intelligence."

Need for a Change in Communication Approach
Hoffman also emphasized that the current approach to communications regarding data centers and artificial intelligence needs to change. He said: "We need a different approach that focuses on the economic benefits of this technology rather than the negative aspects." However, he clarified that supporting artificial intelligence and new technologies is not a prerequisite for his support of electoral candidates in 2028.
Hoffman stated that he generally values support for the rule of law and truth in his political decisions, saying: "Let’s support the rule of law and avoid blatant lies about election denial." In the 2024 election cycle, he has contributed millions of dollars to the presidential campaign of Kamala Harris, the former Vice President.
Hoffman and former President Donald Trump have been in tension for years. This tension arose due to Hoffman’s past financial contributions to Trump’s political rivals and his role in financing lawsuits by a writer named E. Jean Carroll against Trump.
