Security and political implications
Romanian Foreign Minister Ana Toyo reacted to the incident by stating that the Black Sea will be safe again and NATO will address this issue at the North Atlantic Council meeting on Tuesday. This incident is part of a series of events that appear to be a result of Russia's extensive attack on Ukraine.
In October, several drone attacks on ships in the Black Sea off the coasts of Romania and Bulgaria were reported. The latest attack occurred on Thursday, targeting two chemical tankers off the coast of Romania, with seven crew members of these ships reported missing. These ships were anchored near the Sulina Canal, which connects the Danube River to the Black Sea. This canal serves as an export route for Ukraine.
Romania, a member of the European Union and NATO, has a 614-kilometer border with Ukraine, part of which runs along the Danube River. Since the onset of Russia's extensive attack on Ukraine in 2022, the country has frequently reported the illegal entry of Russian drones into its airspace. Romania has been actively shooting down these drones since the beginning of this year.
