In the fifth year of its war against Ukraine, Russia has made little progress on the battlefields. Ukraine has brought the war to various cities in Russia, including Moscow, using drones. This situation is not good news for Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, whose personal credibility is directly tied to this war.

Escalation of Tensions and New Opportunities

Putin is determined to escalate tensions not only against Ukraine but also against Europeans who have helped Kyiv. He believes that Ukrainians have become more vulnerable due to a lack of air defense systems, allowing Russian missiles and drones to more effectively target essential infrastructure in Ukraine, including those necessary for electricity and heating during the winter.

Europe's Preparedness for Russian Threats

European officials are preparing for three types of Russian aggression. They are currently witnessing a significant number of Russian drones entering NATO airspace. This is due to the increasing use of technologies employed by both sides in the war.

Analysts are also warning of potential sabotage attacks and assassination plots. These operations have several objectives: testing NATO's response, disrupting the supply of weapons and equipment to Ukrainian forces, and increasing the perception of the costs of European support for Kyiv.

NATO officials are well aware of the need to prepare for Russian provocations. They are developing a new national security strategy with an "emergency protocol" that allows the European Commission to convene heads of state for a rapid response to Russian aggressions.

Possible Actions and Concerns

Retaliatory actions may include the imposition of new sanctions and the deployment of European military forces and equipment near Russia's borders. Additionally, Europeans control over $225 billion of frozen Russian assets that could be seized.

The hope is that a coordinated and clear European response plan will make Putin more cautious about actions that could escalate the crisis. Europe's message is clearly stated: Europe is united, ready to respond, and committed to supporting Ukraine. Further escalation of tensions will not change Europe's position.
