The Russian drone attack on a train station in Dnipro in eastern Ukraine on Thursday morning left 14 dead. Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, confirmed this toll and stated that the attack was "horrific."
Details of the Attack
According to the Ukrainian state railway operator, a jet-powered drone struck a platform at the station where people were waiting to board a regional train to Zaporizhzhia. Despite increased warnings about threats, people were present on the platform.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that it intercepted three drones in this attack, but another drone managed to penetrate air defenses and damage the station.
Reactions to the Attack
Social media services released images of bodies on the platform, and Boris Filatov, the mayor of Dnipro, called the incident a "tragedy." Serhiy Kurchenko, the Prime Minister of Ukraine, stated: "Russia deliberately targets civilians: in trains, stations, and residential buildings."
Zelensky also called for international action from Kyiv's allies, stating that "sanctions against Moscow and its war machine should not be reduced for as long as this war continues." He referred to a recent agreement between the President of the United States and his Russian counterpart, stating that this agreement has contributed to the easing of sanctions.
Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, also expressed deep concern that Russia continues to target civilians, emphasizing that efforts to achieve lasting peace must be increased.
Russian drone attacks on trains and stations in Ukraine have been ongoing since the war began in February 2022, during which hundreds of locomotives have been destroyed and several railway workers and passengers have been killed. In September, over 5,800 trains were evacuated due to the threat of attacks.
With commercial air travel in Ukraine shut down due to the war, the country's extensive railway network has become the main source of transportation for people and goods. Additionally, on Thursday, officials reported five more deaths from Russian attacks in other parts of Ukraine.
