Danish Officials' Reactions
Meta Frederiksen, the Prime Minister of Denmark, described the incident as part of Russia's increasing pattern of aggressive behavior in Europe. She accused Moscow of escalating a "hybrid war against Europe" and testing and challenging NATO, urging European countries to strengthen their defenses.

Frederiksen stated, "Russia's irresponsible action against a Danish military aircraft during a routine flight yesterday. Russia's actions are meant to intimidate and divide. They will not succeed. We will not hesitate."
Claim by the Danish Foreign Minister
Lars Løkke Rasmussen, the Danish Foreign Minister, described the incident as "completely unacceptable" and summoned the Russian ambassador. He stated that this act could have endangered lives.
Rasmussen accused Moscow of "gradually changing the boundaries of acceptable behavior" and added, "This is something we cannot accept."
The Danish Armed Forces announced that one of their Fennec helicopters was conducting a routine photography mission when the incident occurred. This helicopter was observing a Russian corvette in international waters near the port of Gedser, Denmark.
Danish forces stated, "One of the flares passed close to the helicopter." Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident.
Increasing Tensions at NATO's Eastern Borders
This incident occurs amid rising tensions at NATO's eastern borders. Poland has repeatedly scrambled its fighter jets in response to Russian attacks on Ukraine and has reported incursions of Russian drones into its airspace.
NATO members in the region have strengthened air activities and other defensive measures as Russia's war in Ukraine has increasingly raised concerns about the consequences and direct conflicts between Russian forces and NATO forces.
