Russian airstrikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure have resulted in power outages for thousands of households in the country. Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, announced on Sunday that energy infrastructure in four regions of Ukraine was attacked.
Details of the Attacks on Energy Infrastructure
Zelensky stated on social media: "Just last night, our energy infrastructure in four regions: Dnipro, Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr, and Khmelnytskyi was attacked. Conversion stations, transformers, and power lines that supply electricity to people's homes were targeted."
He also added that currently, hundreds of thousands of families are left without electricity and the intensity of these attacks is very high. These attacks come as Russian officials have also reported extensive Ukrainian attacks on industrial facilities in the Nizhny Novgorod region.
Ukrainian Attacks on Russian Industrial Facilities
Gleb Nikitin, the governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region, announced that a major drone attack occurred last night and this morning in the area. He said: "More than a hundred drones were destroyed" and added that according to initial reports, there were no human casualties. However, industrial facilities in the region have sustained significant damage.
Nikitin further clarified: "During the reconstruction process, there may be temporary outages and reduced services in some sections of the utility networks that provide electricity, hot water, and heating to residential buildings." He did not specifically mention the industrial facilities that were attacked, but the Nizhny Novgorod region is home to the Norylsk oil refinery.
On Friday, the governor of the Samara region in Russia accused Ukraine of carrying out a drone attack early in the morning on the oil refinery in the city of Novokuybyshevsk. Additionally, a report from The Wall Street Journal indicated that Kyiv agreed to halt attacks on Russian oil refineries until after the U.S. midterm elections on November 3 due to pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump.
In October, when Trump announced an energy ceasefire, Ukraine paused drone attacks on Russian oil refineries for 72 hours, but the Kremlin continued to bomb Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
