The Saudi coalition in Yemen has carried out airstrikes after the Houthi attack on King Khalid International Airport, targeting three missile launch platforms. This recent attack resulted in the deaths of three Saudi citizens and injuries to several individuals of various nationalities.
Attacks on King Khalid Airport
King Khalid International Airport was targeted twice on Thursday. The first attack hit the airport facilities, while the second attack targeted a plane belonging to Saudi Airlines. According to reports, these attacks led to the cancellation of hundreds of flights.
Consequences and Reactions
The Indian embassy announced that Air India has suspended its operations until Saturday, while Lufthansa also stated that it has suspended its flights to Riyadh until October 16. The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has also advised airlines to refrain from flying in more areas of Saudi Arabian airspace.
These attacks demonstrate the capability and determination of the Houthis to target deeper objectives within Saudi Arabia, including the capital. The Houthis have also warned Saudi oil facility workers that oil installations will continue to be targeted.
Since 2015, the Houthis have been engaged in a war with the Saudi coalition that began to restore the internationally supported government in Sana'a. This group took control of the capital in 2014.
Despite the Saudi coalition's efforts to change the course of the war, the conflict has not calmed, and in recent weeks, the Houthis have gained greater control over the Bab al-Mandab Strait by capturing large areas of Yemen's coastline. The Saudi coalition continues its counteroffensive against Houthi forces and has succeeded in retaking several areas in this strait, but the fighting appears far from over.
