A shooting at a school in the city of Bend, Oregon, in the northwest United States, left four victims and several injured. The 16-year-old shooter, identified as a former student with special needs, attacked the victims using a 12-gauge shotgun. As a result of this attack, three children aged 5, 8, and 11, and a 25-year-old teacher lost their lives.

Heroic Act of a Father of Two Students

Meanwhile, a 36-year-old father named Kylob Giamanco, whose two daughters also attended the school, bravely rushed to help. While the shooter was attacking the victims, he entered the school with his weapon, targeted the shooter, and killed him. Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz stated, "When someone is willing to risk their life for others, we recognize that. This teacher, who was fighting for his children, is truly a hero, and we don’t see such actions in our community."

Reactions to the Incident

Giamanco's brave act quickly drew attention, and his mother stated that she is very proud of him and considers him a hero. Additionally, U.S. President Donald Trump praised his actions, saying, "This is a terrible event, but fortunately, there was a man who had a weapon and knew how to use it."

This shooting in Bend once again sparked heated debates about gun control laws in the United States. The National Rifle Association (NRA), which is one of the main opponents of strict gun control laws, praised Giamanco's actions, stating, "This horrific act in Oregon reminds us of the importance of having a law-abiding armed citizen."

On the other hand, gun control advocates protested the easy access to firearms in the United States, citing it as the main factor behind the highest rates of gun-related deaths compared to other developed countries. The gun control group GIFFORDS stated, "The gun violence crisis in America is taking our children's lives. Enough is enough."

According to published analyses, there have been 26 school shootings in the United States this year that resulted in injuries or deaths. Additionally, reports indicate that over 360 mass shootings have been recorded across the country this year.
