The Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Greens in Berlin have halted coalition talks with the Left Party due to dissatisfaction with this party's promises regarding Israel and organized crime. The two parties stated that they have not closed the door on the Left Party and that there is a possibility of resuming talks in the future.
Reasons for Halting Talks
The halt of these talks is related to concerns stemming from the critical positions of some members of the Left Party regarding Israel. Additionally, the appearance of a figure linked to organized crime at an election party has raised questions about the Left Party's ability to cooperate with other parties. These issues have led some media outlets and the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) to ponder whether center-left parties can collaborate under the leadership of the Left Party.

On Tuesday, 44 members of the Left Party in the new Berlin parliament referred to a new agreement that was closer to the party's past positions. The new text of the Left Party states: "We support the right to the existence of Israel and equal rights for all people in Israel. Similarly, we support the right to the existence of Palestine and equal rights for all people in Palestine."
Election Results and Current Situation
After the recent elections in Berlin, the Left Party became the largest party, securing nearly 26 percent of the votes. Meanwhile, the Greens garnered just over 14 percent and the SPD close to 12 percent of the votes. This result indicates that if these three leftist parties join forces, they could form a narrow majority.
On the other hand, the SPD and the Greens could also collaborate with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which has been recognized as the second-largest party in this election with 18.8 percent of the votes. However, this coalition may face strong opposition from the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) and the Left Party.
Currently, Olaf Scholz, the Chancellor of Germany, has intervened in these discussions, stating that the false accusations facing the Left Party cannot be overlooked with a written agreement. Meanwhile, it seems that state lawmakers from the Left Party have also rejected this agreement.
Given these developments, the future of coalition politics in Berlin will be significantly influenced by these issues, and it remains unclear whether center-left parties will be able to cooperate with the Left Party.
