The police in South Africa have launched a search operation for suspects following three mass shootings in recent days that resulted in the deaths of at least 32 people.

Details of the Shootings

The shootings occurred in impoverished areas including Wedela in the West Rand near Johannesburg, Lawandile, and Khayelitsha in the Western Cape. On Saturday night, eighteen people were killed in a shooting in Wedela. Police reported that eight men fired at patrons of a bar and then entered the bar and shot at customers. The suspects also stole mobile phones from patrons and fled in two vehicles.

President's Reaction

Cyril Ramaphosa, the President of South Africa, stated on Sunday that "violence and criminality continue in our country" and added that security forces need to take stronger actions to reduce crime. He has urged security forces to deploy all their resources to tackle this crisis.

The recent shootings occur as the country faces an increase in mass shootings and other murders. Officials link some of these attacks to criminal gangs that are fighting over territory and illegal businesses such as illegal mining, drug trafficking, and extortion.

In another shooting in Lawandile, ten people were killed at a recreational venue. This shooting occurred at 1:46 AM on Sunday, and according to police, the attackers fired at customers after entering the venue. In this incident, five people died on the spot, and five others died after being taken to medical facilities.

In Khayelitsha, police responded to a report of a shooting at 7:15 PM and found three men inside a vehicle and another person beside it. No suspects have been identified or arrested.

South Africa faces a high murder rate globally, despite a decrease in violent crimes this year. According to police statistics, 5,427 people have been killed in the last three months, averaging about 60 murders per day.
