The general elections in South Sudan, planned for December 22, are facing serious challenges. This will be the first election held since the country's independence from Sudan in 2011.

Delay in Election Preparations

Political tensions in the country have escalated significantly, with debates over the elections intensifying after President Salva Kiir dissolved the transitional unity government on September 22. Many citizens are worried about security and logistical issues related to the elections.

Fundamental Challenges of the Elections

The lack of voter education and registration with only a few months left until the elections is among the serious concerns. Food prices are rising, and government employees are not receiving their salaries. These conditions could negatively impact public participation in the elections.

Parties have until October 22 to submit their election plans. On October 7, South Sudan hosted inter-party talks where 39 parties discussed important election issues. Cabinet Minister Dr. Martin Elia Lomuro pointed out the existing challenges, stating that insufficient funding could severely affect civic education and electoral infrastructure.

Ensuring security during the elections is also a concern. According to Lomuro, the unified security forces have not yet been fully deployed. He also stated, "The election train has left the station and cannot be reversed. We are working to clear the path for this train to reach December 22."

On the other hand, Changkot Bichok Reath, Secretary-General of the South Sudan Opposition Coalition, emphasized that the success of the elections depends on immediate and comprehensive cooperation from all national institutions. He also called for attention to remaining legal issues and constructive dialogue among political actors.

South Sudan has faced severe conflicts over the years, and any elections without addressing key issues such as voter registration raise doubts about the validity of the elections. Additionally, adverse conditions such as severe flooding, displacement, and food insecurity could negatively affect people's access to polling places.
