Stephen Millar has been appointed as the new Chief of Staff of the White House. Donald Trump, the President of the United States, announced on Friday that Millar, who previously served as Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and is considered an architect of his administration's tough immigration policies, has been appointed to this position.

Changes in Trump's Team

Millar replaces Suzy Wiles, who has held the position since Trump took office. Trump stated, "Millar is one of my trusted advisors" and acknowledged Wiles' work, which he said has been "very good." Trump also announced that Wiles will be moved to "Trump's political operations."

This change comes as Trump's Republican Party has lost control of both the House and Senate following the midterm elections. However, Millar's appointment reflects Trump's desire to continue his tough immigration policies, despite voters across the country rejecting Republicans.

Millar's Controversial Policies

Millar is known for his controversial positions and is considered a staunch supporter of the Trump administration. He frequently appears in the media to defend his extreme positions. In the area of immigration, his ideas include calling for federal agents to arrest 3,000 immigrants a day, while also having the authority to target immigrants who have lived in the United States for years. He is known for helping to expand the duties of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

On foreign policy issues, Millar has defended extrajudicial attacks on boats in the Caribbean Sea that he claims were used by drug traffickers, and he also defended the government's military operation to capture Nicolás Maduro, the leader of Venezuela, in January.

In January 2026, Millar claimed in an interview with CNN that the United States has the right to seize Greenland, after Trump stated that controlling the Danish territory is a strategic necessity. Millar said in the interview, "We live in a real world that is governed by power and military force. These iron laws of the world have existed since the beginning of time."

Responses to Millar's Appointment

Following the announcement of this change, Hakeem Jeffries, a Democratic representative from New York who may be chosen as the next House Speaker, wrote on social media that Millar is a "dangerous and reckless extremist." He referenced the deaths of American citizens who died protesting ICE raids. Senator Chuck Schumer also issued a statement saying that Trump "has learned nothing new" and added, "Stephen Millar is the architect of this administration's inhumane and brutal policies."

Schumer emphasized, "Trump could not have made a worse choice. Our Democratic majority will fight him at every step of the way."
