The French Navy announced that suspicious drones flew over military installations in the southeastern part of the country earlier this month. This event occurred during a large military exercise held from October 5 to 16 and highlights growing concerns about security around military facilities.

Details of the Drone Flights

The French Navy stated in a press release that "unauthorized drones were identified in the no-fly zone, near and above military sites." The statement continues that in each case, planned security measures were activated with the deployment of anti-drone devices along with coordination with internal security forces. Additionally, a judicial investigation has been launched to examine these incidents.

Increasing Security Threats

The sighting of suspicious drones in several European countries, including Denmark, Germany, and France, near military and defense industrial facilities is on the rise. In July, a Moldovan citizen was arrested on suspicion of espionage after flying a drone over a KNDS factory in Munich. Some of these drone incursions are attributed to Russia, as Moscow has intensified its hybrid attacks against European countries.

The French Navy's statement confirms local reports of drone sightings around Toulon. This city in southeastern France hosts one of the country's largest naval bases, which carries the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle as well as attack submarines. According to local reports, drones have flown at night over the naval base, the General Armaments Directorate facility in Toulon, and the 54th Artillery Regiment in Hyères.

Consequences and Responses

A military exercise named Typhon was specifically designed to train against drone sightings. The French Navy emphasized that no sensitive infrastructure was under threat. Additionally, the Ministry of Armed Forces and Veterans Affairs warned the public that unauthorized drone flights near or over military facilities are strictly prohibited.

Ultimately, these events represent new challenges that military forces in Europe are facing and underscore the importance of securing against unexpected threats.
