The collapse of the roof of an elementary school in the Afridiabad area of Peshawar, Pakistan, on Thursday claimed the lives of 32 students under the age of 13 and one teacher. This incident occurred while local officials reported that 50 others were also injured and were transferred to Lady Reading Hospital.
Details of the Incident
According to officials, rescuers quickly arrived at the scene and began searching for survivors. Iftikhar Khan, the regional emergency officer, stated: "We have rescued at least 45 children from under the rubble, but we suspect that more children may still be trapped beneath the debris."
A teacher who is hospitalized said in an interview with reporters that this school had three floors and over 1200 students and staff. He also pointed out the dangers posed by low construction standards, which have led to similar incidents occurring across the country.
Background of Similar Incidents
Similar incidents in Pakistan have become increasingly common in recent years. In July, three young girls near Umar Kot lost their lives due to the collapse of a wall at a public school. Also, in the same month, in Lahore, a child died and five others were injured when the roof of a private school under construction collapsed. A month prior, 14 children died in a similar manner at a private educational center in Lahore.
The exact cause of this tragedy is still unclear, but experts believe that fundamental issues in construction and maintenance standards may be the primary reason for these incidents. Local media in Pakistan emphasize the urgent need for serious reforms in this area.
Consequences and Reactions
This incident has once again drawn attention to the dangerous state of educational infrastructure in Pakistan. Given the high number of students in schools and the lack of safety facilities, officials must work to improve conditions and prevent the recurrence of such tragedies. This disaster has also heightened public concerns about the safety and security of children in schools.
It is hoped that in light of this tragic event, more attention will be paid to safety issues in schools and the improvement of construction standards in the country.
