The collapse of the roof of an elementary school in the Afridiabad area of Peshawar, Pakistan, on Thursday resulted in the death of 27 students under the age of 13 and one teacher. Local officials reported that the incident occurred in the early hours of the day, and as a result, more than 40 others were transferred to the hospital due to the severity of their injuries.

School Specifications and Construction Conditions
One teacher who is hospitalized told reporters that this school had three floors and over 1,200 students and staff. The cause of the incident is not yet clearly determined, but local media in Pakistan have pointed to the deteriorating state of construction standards and building maintenance throughout the country.
This incident is considered one of several similar deadly occurrences in Pakistan. In July, three young girls were killed near Umar Kot due to the collapse of a wall at a public school. Also in that month, one child lost their life and five others were injured in Lahore following the collapse of the roof of a private school under construction.
A month earlier, 14 children lost their lives in a similar incident at a private tutoring center in Lahore. These incidents highlight the need for improvement and oversight of building safety in schools and other public facilities.
Given the recurrence of such incidents, there is concern that the failure to adhere to construction standards could cost human lives. This issue becomes even more critical in areas with high populations where there is a need for safe educational facilities.
