The European Union (EU) is conducting diplomatic outreach with the United States government to prevent a proposed 90-day ban on diesel exports. Officials from the union have warned that this action could have significant effects on European markets.

Concerns of the European Union

Olof Gill, spokesperson for the European Commission, reacted to the news by stating: "The European Union is watching with concern reports about the United States' plan to ban diesel exports, including to the EU. Any disruption could negatively impact both sides."

He also noted that high-level contacts between the EU and the U.S. government are ongoing, and the union expects that "close partners will consult with each other before taking measures that affect the common market."

Impact on the Market and Diesel Imports

In recent months, diesel imports from the United States to the European Union have increased, and the union currently sources about 57% of its diesel from America. Prices have risen due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and attacks on Russian oil refineries in Ukraine.

This ban, which has been reported for the first time, is proposed for 90 days due to increasing concerns from American farmers about rising fuel prices. However, this action has faced strong opposition from the U.S. oil sector, which warns that the ban could severely restrict global supply. Chris Wright, Trump's energy secretary, is also against this ban.

Market Monitoring and Supply Security

Anna-Kaisa Itkonen, a spokesperson for the Commission, added that Brussels, along with member states, is "closely monitoring markets and supply security." She stated that the EU remains a "major diesel importer from the United States" and continues to be a "reliable and attractive market for the U.S."

Given the EU's heavy reliance on diesel imports from America and the potential impacts this ban could have on European markets, it seems that this issue has become one of significant political and economic importance. Currently, diplomacy and discussions between the two sides are ongoing to prevent further crises.
